Am I retarded or is anyone else having trouble downloading the paper? I'm sent email to them and no response. Instructions may help :) I've subscribed, I've advertised, and now can't see it :(

Re: Pennsic Independent
Sun, August 10, 2008 - 7:06 AMThat's ok... they tried something rather annoying this year. Each day they added more mistakes to the stories and ads. If you found them all you'd get a free subscription.
What sucked is that I advertised for my son's first birthday. The ad had two sentences. They made two mistakes in my ad. Not only did I have the pleasure of paying for those mistakes (and I'm a magazine editor) but it ruined what I wanted to do for my son's first birthday.
They suck and I hope what goes around - comes around on them! -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Sun, August 10, 2008 - 1:53 PMThey altered your ad copy ????
That's ridiculous. But thanks for sharing. Next time I want to place an ad or something, I'll remember to get assurances that they are going to print what I paid for. -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 12:53 AMSpeaking of the ads...
Let's air this one out right now... A couple of my friends were having a couple on me. I have no kids I know of. Yet...
- and I've seen a photo of this "Wolf' guy on some sort of Gladiator TV show. Ok-ok, so there's a resemblance... - sheesh.

Mon, August 11, 2008 - 4:45 AMi'm really coming to question the quality of the independant. I watched one of the battles they reported on and the reporter must have been watching something else. -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 6:58 PMHowdy from Nicolaa, editor of the Independent:
I found out first-hand this year what a difficult job our battlefield reporter has, and how well he manages even so.
During the Bridge battle, I was up on the North end attending Her Majesty of Ealdormere. There were five bridges in that battle.
When I read the account, it really sounded like it was a different battle - until I realized our reporter must have been on the south side of the battlefield, as far away as possible from the bridge I was watching.
The battlefield is large, and particularly in the battles with multiple areas to fight, it's a real challenge. Our reporter is a modern sports reporter, and I know for a fact that no other sport he covers has that many people on the field doing so many different things at one time.
I will pass on to him that he may want to include where he was situated for future reports. I think that might make it more understandable.

Re: Pennsic Independent
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 7:07 PMHello from Nicolaa, editor of the PI:
Jim, we did not alter ad copy. Any mistakes made were genuine mistakes. Please do not attribute malice where none was present.
In all cases, where a mistake in the classifieds is brought to our attention, we attempt to make it right, either by refunding money or running the corrected version in the next edition. -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 6:52 PMThanks for the clarification. I did have a hard time believing that anybody publishing a newspaper would deliberately put errors in.
Although, I'm sure you can see how some would read it that way.
Thanks for doing the paper. We enjoy it!

Re: Pennsic Independent
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 4:59 AMI got a thanks in the paper from Tir Thalor, for bringing a couple cases of meaD to their party. The paper printed something like "Hope everyone at the party enjoyed the meaT. Thanks grim!"
While the innuendo that I supplied "meat" to be enjoyed at the party was good for a few chuckles, I believe that it was flat out unprofessional to purposefully modify paid advertising. They should have stuck with modifying their own articles for a laugh.
Very unprofessional. -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 11:54 AMGreetings from Despotissa Heirusalem Crystoma, Publisher of The Pennsic Independent.
I’d like to offer a couple of clarifications to the posts regarding errors in PI.
First, we did not deliberately add any errors to the paper. Every year, we have folks come by to point out various punctuation or spelling errors in each issue. This year we decided to make it fun for them and for us by publishing a random number each day. If someone actually found that number of errors, it would have been worth it to give them a subscription. The closest number found was 88, and that person received a free subscription for making the effort and bringing it to us.
We did add one error to a classified, one we placed ourselves. We would never deliberately make errors in any portion of the paper, especially to those ads placed and paid for.
I agree that there were more errors in classifieds than normal. I know why and am taking measures to ensure that we have better quality control over that next year. Please note that some, but not all of the problem was due to being shorthanded on proofreaders, and even on typesetters on a couple of days. A number of staff members and volunteers became ill during this year’s run of PI.
We generate our classified ads at about 3:00 pm each day. We welcome anyone who would like to volunteer to read these and make corrections. We’re a good group of folks to be around, and I am happy to ply folks with cool drinks and snacks. We would love to see you there.
Regarding PDF downloads: We had some problems early in the week with getting our PDFs on the site. We had this solved by the second day. My web editor and I personally responded to questions regarding this. If you are continuing to have problems with your PDF subscription, please contact me at service@pennsicindependent.com and I’ll see what I can do to help you. We’ve had several hundred editions downloaded already, so I am certain things are working right on this end. There are some things that can go wrong on the user end, however. We want you to be able to get your subscription.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to apologize to those who did have difficulties this year. PI is a passion for me. There are so many good things we have done, can do, and will continue to do. It breaks my heart when we make mistakes.

Re: Pennsic Independent
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 12:09 PMOn a more personal note, THANK YOU, Heirusalem for the use of your ladder and the extension cord so that my duties to the Middle-Eastern tent could be easier. You rock!
so.... what would it take to get more coverage of some of the Middle-Eastern shows into the PI? Can anyone submit a review or do we have to appeal to a staff member to review them? It would be great to see the Cure Sallee and/or the Expo covered like some of the other performances are. Just a thought.

I was an ad designer for about 8 1/2 years and proof-reading copy was part of the job. I have every intention of being at Pennisc next year (I've missed 2 in a row - sucky)...and would be happy to pop round to help out. I kind of miss the "old job." :)

Thu, August 21, 2008 - 8:51 PMAs a photographer and general proof-reader, I think that I'll be stopping by too. I was considering this time around, but it was my first year and I wanted to concentrate on not getting lost first... But it sounds like fun, I would be happy to help out as well. -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Sat, August 23, 2008 - 8:54 AMWe choose to involve ourselves in certain activities when we go to War , each of us participate in our own individual ways, whatever floats our boat. To see people work on a paper , so the rest of us unwashed masses have another cool aspect to add to what is all ready an incredible experience to begin with, should be appreciated and not criticized .
I understand where some folks are coming from with mistakes that may have resulted in hurt feelings on a personal level, but I think that coverage that folks feel that should be included can easily be addressed by more people donating their time or submitting their pictures , reports or ideas to the paper. I am not exactly sure how it works , I am just a simple dumb stick jock, but I watch a friend of mine get up before anyone else (including the sun) to slug their stuff up to work on the paper , and come home barely by sunset after donating their whole day to put this thing out. I can't see any way to justify being critical or anything short of grateful that some choose to work, instead of playing all day long ,like the majority of us can do when we are down there on our vacation.
The SCA is a funny thing, it is people donating their time , talents and often hard work for the betterment of the "game " for all those involved . But there is always someone being a squeaky wheel about the efforts of others. That is just the nature of what it is being human I suppose . Some are out there doing it, others are out there making it possible for others to do it , and some will sit around and complain bout how people aren't doing it right. -

Re: Pennsic Independent
Sat, August 23, 2008 - 10:56 PMI really hope that my request about Middle-Eastern coverage was not taken as criticism of the paper! If so, it was not meant that way at all! The Independent neighbors the Middle-Eastern tent and were wonderful to us every day of Pennsic, including letting us use their ladder and giving us an extension cord!! I was merely asking if there was a way to get some of our events covered and how to do so, including having folks from our community do the coverage and the writing. After all, who knows better how to review a Middle-Eastern dance and music show than Middle-Eastern dancers and musicians?
There is SO much that goes on at Pennsic and it's impossible to cover all of it. I think the Independent is a fine paper and its volunteers should be applauded. I know what you mean about the long hours. Some of the same folks who were there when I opened the ME tent in the morning were still there when I came to close it in the evening.
So I guess the real question is, how does one get on staff? Is the writing staff in place before Pennsic or can anyone drop a story off at the tent for submission? I personally won't be able to commit to a staff position since I already have one (Middle-Eastern class coordinator again), but I do know many in the Pennsic community who have written reviews and articles for similar events in mundania. Perhaps they'd be willing to do so for the Independent if they knew who to talk to and when to talk to them by.

I agree with that - they are a good group to be around! Join in the fun!
(I would, but as a lousy speller, it probably wouldn't help!)

Re: Pennsic Independent
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 7:03 PMHello from Nicolaa, editor of PI:
I want to assure you that any mistakes in the PI were genuine mistakes. We did not add mistakes to the paper. I would not allow that to happen. My name is on that paper as editor, and it's part of my job to make sure the articles, in particular, are well-edited and grammatically correct.
As Heirusalem mentions, we did have some issues with the classified ads. Corrections I made personally to ads did not always get corrected in the print copy. I want to personally apologize for ruining your son's first birthday. I take full responsibility for the error. It was not intentional and not meant to injure, but it is clear that it did. I am very sorry. -
