our camp (MORNING WOOD) is lower on our numbers than usual. I have also heard a couple of other camps are low as well. Am i paranoid that people are growing tired of pennsic, or is it that since they changed the time when pennsic starts pushing people away?
any thoughts?

Re: low numbers
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 9:44 PMI think it has something to do with the fluctuating gas pices(it ranges anywhere from $3.67 to $3.89/gal. out here in Oklahoma City). I know I habe not grown tired of it. :o) Can't to come 'home'. -

Re: low numbers
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 9:57 PMWhere I live on Long Island, regular self serve is $4.47 a gallon (that's in Huntington) cheapest on all of Long Island is $4.19 a gallon.
We're going to Pennsic, we're pre registered and we're going to have a great war (Yay!) but we're going to have to play it a bit thriftier on the purchases.
Just can't miss Pennsic, at any price. -

Re: low numbers
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 10:05 PMholy cow...yeah, i have a friend working for Norwegian Cruise Lines in Hawaii; she said it was around $4.90/gal. :( -

Re: low numbers
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 10:35 PMchicago's gas prices are very high as well. good point about that as a reason why people are not going. I missed last year. The only one in 14 years. I was pissed. not missing this year -
-
Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 12:17 PMI think you'll see fewer people from the "fringes" - the core SCA folks will still attend, unless things are really tight. My camp numbers are right about the same the last 3 years, give or take 5 people or so.
-
-
Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 12:31 PMWe lost a few of our regulars this year in my camp - in part due to the economy, as well as other commitments. But we also picked up a few more, so I think we are only down a total of two pre-reg's from last year. Not too bad.
-
Re: low numbers
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 4:51 AMFewer folks from the "fringes" might not be a bad thing.
Low numbers aren't all bad... means it will be a more "intimate" 10,000... ;-)

Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 12:32 PMWe had our pre-Pennsic household meeting this past weekend, and rumor is that overall pre-reg numbers are down a bit, from campers to merchants. What "down a bit" means will remain to be seen - I agree that the hard-core folks will be there if at all possible, but there's no denying that the inflation we're seeing across the board is making people re-think priorities.
At the least, I suspect we're all going to be a lot more frugal. -
-
Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 2:16 PMWe have stayed relatively the same as last year (waiting for the final number to come in). But those who can't make it this year it is definitely the strains of the economy, not a loss of interest.
I think with lower numbers this year will launch a huge year down the road when people make up for missing this year.
Time will tell. -

Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 4:40 PMI think it is likely a combination of the cost of gas and the fact that it is an odd number year. It will be interesting to see how the merchants do. Of course the people who will not attend will be the poorer members who likely buy the Pennsic T shirts and nick nacks. The folks who buy armor, fencing, and archery equipment will likely still be spending. I have not yet received my tax rebate and have just learned that I have a $937 refund coming from 2006! So this year I'll be spending like a sailor. -

Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 4:47 PMOops! I entirely neglected to mention that our camp's (Pentwyvern's) numbers are down by at least 1/3 and possibly closer to 1/2. Of course our members, with few exceptions, come mostly to socialize. We used to be a geographic group camp, West suburbs of Cleveland Dagorhir, but over the years people moved and we took in folks we met at Pennsic. We now come from Texas in the West and Long Island in the East. Two and three years ago we even had an Italian camper. The merchants, and few regular SCA members of our camp will be in attendance as per usual. -

Re: low numbers
Sun, June 22, 2008 - 6:24 AMWell, if I ever feel the need for a complete change of scenery, I'll give you a call! Never amped at Pennsic yet in an area with trees around it, or so close to the lake. You guys rocked last year!

Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 4:59 PMI agree with the consensus that alot of the downward flux of numbers has to do with the economy. -

Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 7:39 PMA friend of mine talked to one of the Cooper's a few days ago and apparantly pre-reg was down 17% from last year. I think combined with the change in dates and the Economy, some people just can't make it this year. Maybe there will be less fighting over camp space and less squatters (At least down in the swampie areas). -

Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 8:15 PMWe are all seeing the same thing the pundits say to the presidential candidates... "It's the economy, stupid" LOL!
I'm interested to see what this Pennsic will be like. I, too, believe that the die hard Pennsic lovers will be there if it is within their power. I think the folks who will choose not to come will be the ones who come to Pennsic just to party and drink, rather than live the dream. It is a kind of expensive trip, pre-reg/troll, gas, turnpike tolls, etc... I think the "Fair Weather" Pennsic goers will think there are better things they can do with that money... AS IF!!! LOL! -
-
Re: low numbers
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 11:05 PMHey I goto party and drink. I dont fight at Pennsic any more. The reason I can get good fights else where but only place to party like pennsic is at Pennsic. We are draging a few newbies this year. Might not be the best year to take them But I am sure they will have a Blast. Only problem 3 trucks from NC and back that is not going to be cheap. -
-
Re: low numbers
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 10:00 PMOh don't get me wrong... I go to party and drink as well. I meant the people who aren't REALLY into the whole period-ness of Pennsic, ya know?

Re: low numbers
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 7:21 AMI don't know if this is a general trend, but our camp's pre-reg went from 5 to 19 in the last week. A lot of people were holding out 'til the last minute, either because they weren't sure they would be able to go, or were waiting for that last-minute paycheck to get the money.
I think we will see a lot of new merchants this year. High gas prices will keep a lot of the regulars (especially the ones who travel the furthest) from attending, but I'm sure that there are plenty of new merchants waiting for the space.
There are a couple of Pennsic carpool sites, including one here on Tribe.net. -

Re: low numbers
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 7:32 AMOur household is down from almost 50 to jsut about a dozen this year. Due to the date change and the economy and a lot of other factors. Changing jobs, no vacation time, family issues, etc....

Re: low numbers
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 7:51 AMOur camp seems to hold steady in its numbers from year to year but fluxes on who actually attends. The time change has affected some of our auto company workers because they get an automatic two weeks off in July for shut down and can't take the time off. Then again we gain a two weeker because of school timing. We also had a Feargus steal one of our numbers but as long as he keeps paying "dues" each year, we'll let it slide.

Re: low numbers
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 8:23 AMOur camp is actually going to be the biggest it's ever been at a max capacity of 7 this year !! Whoa ! : ) However, most of us only live an hour and half away so it's not too tooooo ridiculous in gas (however, gas prices are still very ridiculous in general!!) ... and we have two folks flying in from out West ...
I'm feeling afraid to spend money because things seem so shaky and uncertain. I wanted a big, nice new tent this year, but with the economy the way it is - I'll just save the money and bring a huge tarp to cover my entire leaky tent. ; ) Oh and towels...pack extra towels.

Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 12:49 PMI say go for it! For my mid one hundreth year Birthday I decided to buy myself a good canvas tent. Money WELL spent already.
I get to freak out people at other events.
You can get by on alot less than you think you can. Fun is all you really need and that is free, just stay dry and you will be alright: whatever that takes -
-
Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 1:47 PMWe have the same numbers pre-registered as last year. Once again we expect a couple more to show up out of nowhere.
The core of the camp is still the same 6 or so that have made it the last 8 years. The Easter Island Girls. A couple of people on their second or third year in a row. A couple that lapsed from the past, and some newbies. We usually run in the mid twenties for bodies. Overall the clan runs about 80 to 100 people, but we could never get get that many to attend War all on the same year. Can't say that I am enthused about paying another 40 bucks out for gas either. -
-
Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 4:09 PMI know the economy and a few other things are cutting my camps' numbers this year. Has nothing to do with hard core, just simply cannot do it.
Hopefully we'll be back next year.

Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 6:58 AMWe too have the same number of pre-regs as usual, but we may have lower numbers actually attending since at least 4 of the pre-regs were put in with a note of not knowing about actually making it until closer to Pennsic with gas prices going up, dissertation defenses, and Presidential campaign stuff going on. -
-
Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 9:00 AMI am not sure how many pre-regs we have but based on discussions within our household it seems like our numbers will be the same or slightly increased. The difference seems to be that a few of the members won't be coming for as long as they have in past years, mainly due to work related things... -

Re: low numbers
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 4:58 PMwe're actually a few more this year, but thats just this year. I think what we'll see is alot more non pre-reg people, that'll wait till the last minute to see if they can afford the drive to war.

Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 12:30 PMAs merchants...We are expecting numbers to be lower at Pennsic. We are adjusting our mundane life to fuel prices too...It sucks!!
Anyway we have wanted to be more avaliable to those who fight but may not be able to make the Pennsic journey for their vacation, so we as merchants have been trying to show up at some of the traditional wars just to be available to more folk.
I personally: would flip hamburgers for weeks to be able to get my Pennic yearly fix. But this might be a good thing for all because those who want the best armor may not have to travel to see, feel and talk about what they want.
Everything always has some good out of it right. I wonder if I will be able to get ahot shower at Pennsic . Maybe after midnight ?? -

Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 1:37 PMWe've got 37 pre-reged at House Sable Maul and probably another dozen or so who will come but, didn't pre-reg for one reason or another. Alot of our people live within 3 hours of pennsic, so gas prices are a minor annoyance to most of us. Still, if I lived on the west coast, I doubt I could afford a plane ticket or several hundred dollars in gas. -
-
Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 6:27 PMWe have one more pre-reg than last year 24 are we. Going to be a great war and we are bringing more cool stuff. Added a bar for our bar. You will have to come by and say hi to understand what that means. New tents and more viking chairs.
Next year we will have even more people.

Re: low numbers
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 8:29 PMI don't know if we are up or down. Haven't heard either way. But I do know that even though I've pre-regged, whether I make it there or not will depend heavily on whether I get my SCAdian transport vehicle back roadworthy or not by then. As the old pickup just isn't either trustworthy for the distance (not to mention the INSANE load I haul) - and it sucks fuel like it's Cauldron Juice. And the car simply wouldn't be nearly enough.
On another note: I've helped more people into new canvas housing this year since New Years than ever before. And I mean like more than double any previous year. So someone out there is definitely going to War...

Thu, June 19, 2008 - 1:02 AMcowboy you have to go. missed ya last year it wouldn't be the same without you
-
Re: low numbers
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 7:14 AMBetween the Toledo and Cleveland groups, I'm sure there's enough folks you've helped over the years who owe you and can help, even if it means splitting up your load amongst a few.
If it comes down to it, put the word out - it wouldn't be the same without you!! -
-
Re: low numbers
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 5:39 PMI can't really imagine the Ohio peeps leaving anyone out who wants to go to War, can you? Therefore, I'm pretty sure Cowboy will be there, one way or another... never fear, Cowboy! -

Nowhere near close to a final number, of course, since pre-reg just closed Sunday, but there ya go. -

Wed, June 18, 2008 - 9:27 PMThe Penn numbers from some of our last minute pre-reggers were in the 11,000's
