First Trip to Pennsic

topic posted Sun, April 6, 2008 - 10:14 AM by
Greetings fellow Scadians,
I will be attending Pennsic for the first time this year. I have a household who has invited me to camp, so I have a place to stay. I was just wondering if the veterans out there have any general advice for a Pennsic newbie? Any ideas on what not to miss there, and what to avoid etc. I am also new to tribes and would be interested in adding friends to my list.

My first Pennsic was last year, and I only went for 2 or 3 days, due to knee problems I was having. Been looking forward to this year's Pennsic ever since I left last year's. I'm also pretty new to the SCA... Pennsic last year was basically my first event, except for a local meeting/event I'd attended several years ago when I really didn't have time to get involved.

You're going to have a blast, that I can just about guarantee. And you will get plenty of good advice from the people here. I can also send you the packing list that I've been putting together if you want to use it as an example. It's largely based on one available at a site I believe has already been linked here, combined with suggestions from the friend who got me involved in the SCA.

last year was my first Pennsic too! I've also been going through some serious withdrawl.

I wish I had made more friends instead of just hanging around my camp (we were in the singles area) and not meeting anyone. This year I'm making it a point to talk to more people and seek out more things to do. But honestly the little that I did do was amazing... which I think says something.

Don't drink anything called "Strawberry Surprise" (There are a gajillion brewers at Pennsic, most eager for you to try their latest concoction. I make it a policy to not try anything with an odd name unless they'll tell me whats in it. I have some evil allergies. "strawberry mead" is descriptive. "Strawberry surprise" isn't!)

Don't miss the chance to make new friends. Pennsic is full of people who are friends you just haven't met yet. I have found friends wandering the roads and randomly chatting. Ditto sitting in front of the Cooper's store. Or on a pirate ship.

Take the time to people-watch. you can get some wonderful garb ideas!

Go to at least one big party. Go to at least one class.

    and above all, wear sunscreen!

Pennsic is Huge!!! Don't expect to be able to see everything in a day, nevermind two weeks. Mke friends, say "Hi!" to people. If you get lost, even after four yrs. of Pennsic I still get lost, don't be afraid to ask for help.

      Most of all, have fun.

Bring water with you everywhere and drink plenty of it. Make sure you know where the chirgeons are in Pennsic Town and if you have allergies, have a medical condition, etc make sure they know. Keep a list of medications and copies of your insurance cards handy just in case. Also, have someone give you a tour of Pennsic so you have a general idea of where you are. You'll want to see everything and do everything; just remember to take it easy and stop and smell the Pennsic.

      Check the party calendar at:

      tribes.tribe.net/darkthirt...4a7e98ed65

You can't possibly hit all of them and everybody has their favorites, but it'll give you a good idea of what's happening on any night.

You'll be doing alot of walking, there are buses but they don't go everywhere or run all the time.

Garb for all types of weather, expect hot days, chilly nights and at least one downpour. You'll be camping for up to two weeks, prepare for it. You're going to want either a good air-mattress or some type of bed. Don't sleep on the bare ground, it'll suck the heat right out of you. If you have a nylon dome tent and don't camp where it's heavily wooded, expect to be baked out early in the morning.

Vol. to help at war. Take a couple of shifts at security, it's a great way to learn your way around. Vol. at Troll, watch people dance thru the tent as they arrive. (Yes, some really do dance into Troll, I've also seen some people bend down and "kiss" the ground).

      ;-)

Always have plenty of dry socks stashed in a water tight container, pace yourself, take a round doing security, and be open and friendly when meeting new people.

socks at Pennsic? Is that what I have been doing wrong all these years, not wearing socks?

Visit the bog at night. Do not drink anything that looks like coolaid, especially if it is being pulled around in a 10 gallon container on a cart.

          1. Bring the following garb essentials - belt, pouch, mug. Belt is for wearing and hanging stuff on. Pouch is the medieval pocket, to be hung on the belt. Mug is for drinking. Anything else is extra.

          2. Wear comfy shoes. DO NOT break sandals in at Pennsic.

          3. If you're there for more than a few days, bring a tent you can stand up in. Your back will thank you.

          4. Carry booze with you. Even an idiot can make friends if he carries booze. If you're not an idiot, you will retain those friends after the booze is gone.

          5. Have warm and cold weather garb, and everything in between. Pennsic weather is unpredictible at best.

          6. If you are easily offended or disturbed by public intoxication, loud voices, or scantily clad women, stay home.

          7. Always bring duct tape, plastic bags, and a small flashlight. You never know when you may need to keep things dry or bury a body at night.

          8. Don't drink the water. Your anus will thank you.

          9. Condoms save lives. They also save embarrassing situations with the Butterface you just woke up next to.

          10. Don't listen to anyone who says you HAVE to do something one way. It's Pennsic - express yourself. Just be willing to accept the consequences of your actions.

I second #9... You are more likely to get laid if you are prepared: ) My camp has a functional condom machine and I tend to give any of the idio... college guys in our camp at least enough quarters for one each. They take the hint from there on out!

I have to agree with wildcat on all of the above. On top of this, I've got some more suggestions:

            - Leave a clean change of mundane clothes in sealed bags in your vehicle. This is for your ride home.

            - If you're not used to walking, start now. Depending on what aspects of Pennsic you're into, you will potentially be walking many, many miles a day. Uphill. Both ways. (I kid you not - Pennsic is weird like that)

            - Do. Not. Drink. Anything. Called. "Surprise". I know many people who have fallen victim to that one.

            - If you like to walk alone, or in small groups, at night, then orient yourself to landmarks to get back to your camp. This can be much harder than it sounds for your first Pennsic. I am fortunate enough to be able to direct our camp's fledgling members back pretty easily due to some damned simple landmarks. You'd be amazed how many people get lost walking around a lake... *sigh*

            - Hydrate. With something in a bottle. And remember to eat. I will save your ass.

            - Multiple pairs of footwear. While this one's not strictly necessary, swapping off worn, suddenly-painful sandals for a sturdy pair of boots when you're going to slogging through mud can be a godsend. Having said boots when the swamp EATS one of the aforementioned sandals is a lifesaver.

            - If someone tells you that something is more alcoholic than it tastes, it probably is. If that person is feeding you Rescue Ranger punch, or is one of us folks from House Three Skulls, it definitely is. Some of us make such drinks taste as mild as possible.

            - Likewise, if someone flatly refuses to tell you what is in the drink they're offering you, use your instincts. See the references to strawberry suprise.

            - Unless you're sleeping directly under a tree, you WILL get cooked out of your tent at some point. It's just gonna happen unless you wake up earlier.

            - Finally, a piece of more personal advice that has helped me over the years. When in doubt, follow the drums. You're very likely to find whatever it is you were looking for in the first place.

I personally do not head the sock thing but I know alot of people like their socks. If you are prone to wearing the horrid things, I guess you would want dry ones:)

I have had said cool-aid-like concoction and did not have an adverse reaction. I also don't (knock on wood) get hangovers either ; P

Be prepared for very hot and dry days, chilly nights, and incredible downpours that will try to soak all your garb and bedding.

Not that this is always going to happen. Sometimes the weather is perfectly beautiful (if hot and humid, as is typical for SW PA). But it _could_ happen. Actually , it's not really all that uncommon. Prepare for weather, and most of your other problems will be minor.

And please visit my place. The Chalkman Pub. Open Mon, Wed, Friday, both weeks.

In fact, in case of downpours, it's a really good idea to make sure you have at least one or two complete changes of clothes, shoes AND a change of bedding put aside someplace where they cannot possibly get wet. Best place is all wrapped up inside your vehicle, but if this is not possible, you can probably get by with DOUBLE-bagging the items up in plastic and then placing them inside a sealed plastic tub in your tent.

When it comes to Pennsic rain storms, think tarps...as in those planned for plus extra...and something to tie them down. Even cheap tarps from Big Lots. Big, blue and ugly, but they can save your stuff if the tent starts to leak.

waterproof you're tent, and dig a ditch around it so water doesn't run under it. coopers lake campground has a variety of terrain so you could end up on a slope. bring a variety of garb (lightwieght and heavy) because sometimes it gets cool at night. bring a couple pair of shoes as well. and as others said bring lots of water. you will walk alot!

If you can't stand the though of losing something or having it ruined, leave it at home.

If you think you may need it bring
if you bring it someone else will have brought one too
the one thing you desperatlly need will be the one thing you or your camp mates didn't bring.

Bring a Rubbermaid tote to store stuff that must stay dry. A collapsed tent and wet bedding in a thunderstorm sucks, but all will dry out. Your digital camera will die, any medication can be ruined, etc. Keep that stuff safe, just in case.

Along with all the other helpful suggestions ... please bring sunscreen. And a small first aid kit (I'm a chirurgeon and mundanely an EMT). This is my 16th War ... you'll either love it, or hate it but be prepared.

We're on the same block as the Pub (Chalkman) ... we're Lusty Wench Tavern and our party is the middle Sunday of Pennsic.

    Come on by.
