Most memorable pennsic experiance

topic posted Mon, September 24, 2007 - 7:53 AM by  Magnus Magi
almost everybody has something that stands out for them from a Pennsic past.
I ask that you share your story, to help inspire new people who have not yet experianced
Pennsic, not that anyone who has ever been there needs to justify taking a week or two off work to time travel ...... but there are always new people!!!

I will get us started : at my first pennsic my buddy got so drunk he locked himself in a porta-castle and passed out...... I thought about leaving him there but in good conscious could not.
So after much yelling and pounding on the porta-castle, a nice pirate saw what was happening and told us his friend did the same thing the night before, he smiled and popped the lock on the porta-castle........and just like that the whole "welcome home" thing made sense!!! No shit there I was............

I won't name names except to say it was yep, more pirates, but several years ago a friend of mine not only locked himself into a porto castle one night, but then GOT LOST. He couldn't find the door.

Alchohol was involved. Another friend, also drunk, stood on the road trying to shout directions to him on how to exit.

What's scary is that this is a common happening.

"Another friend, also drunk, stood on the road trying to shout directions to him on how to exit. "

Ok can you find the seat?

          Yeah

          Ok sit down

          <THUNK> Ok I'm sitting.

NO you missed the seat that sound came from the floor. Stand up adn try again

<Thunk, clumop clump> Ok I'm standing now what?

          Can you find the seat?

          Yeah

          Then sit on the seat!

          <Fwump, Thunk> OUCH!

Ok you missed the seat but you were closer this time. Can you stand up?

          Umm I think I'm stuck?

Great. Can you feel the door handle?

No but my purse is all wet.

Ok then turn away from your purse and you'll find the door.

Ew that stuff smells and is all sticky

You know what, just swim out ok? I'll catch you on the other side.

Dear me, is potty adventures the best we can do???

There's something about having two fine samurai for an escort. Even in a downpour:

A few weeks before this past Pennsic, a friend had suggested a sake and moon viewing party and told me to invite a friend or two. Although it was raining by that evening, I did not wish to disappoint my hostess, so my two friends and I set off into the darkness in search of her encampment somewhere down in Block E23. As we reached a section of road that sloped sharply, I stopped, stepped out of my slippery lacquered geta and began padding barefoot down the asphalt. Accordingly, my two escorts tried to warn me of puddles. I cannot help thinking that any illusions H. previously had of my elegant comportment have been completely destroyed by the reality of my inner three-year-old seizing the upper hand and barefootin' it merrily through a downpour. I got scolded for wandering off to try to read a road sign at a turnoff without my escort. But surely any self respecting bandit, tengu or kitsune would've been holed up somewhere warm and dry!

We never found the party, so we went back up to Yama Kaminari to O.'s brand new "hut." I was ordered to take off the sodden Tosenin kosode as Our Host ducked in the back and came out with something dry for me. A chorus of "uh-ohs" in the dim glare of the flashlight revealed that brown dye had run onto the linen kosode I'd worn under the silk. I gratefully thrust my arm through a layer of flannel lined sleeve and shuddered as I saw the plastic gleam of dull red snakeskin. "Oh no." "Oh, yes." It was The Komodo Kimono, and yes, my dear friends, I wore it in front of the Kami and All The Neighbors. Quite possibly the ugliest bit of gag garb I have seen in my short time on earth, warm and dry trumps wet and muddy.

A cup of tea, a bottle of Mike's Lemonade, some good conversation and the patter of rain on the "thatch" made for a very pleasant evening. My Host and I, running on Mountain and Pacific time respectively, noticed that H. was starting to nod, so as soon as the rain slowed sufficiently, I made my apologies and H. escorted me back to West Royal. Waking the following morning, to the sight of the Komodo Kimono hanging in all its hideous glory from my lantern hook, I wrote:

    Summer storms cannot dampen
    These kindred spirits
    Gathered in the rain.
    Friendly hospitality
Lends new meaning to shared robes.

" Dear me, is potty adventures the best we can do??? "

That's similar to what I thought: Certainly, it's a heaven-sent not to worry about having a glass or two more than one should have when driving (and it's even nicer to forget "proper behavior" just because it is Pennsic, which makes drinking so much more fun than in mundania), but getting seriously plastered and porta potty mishaps seem rather minor adventures given the miraculously good times one can have at Pennsic.

My most memorable moment was probably the last night at my first Pennsic, when on a starry night, a singer and a dancer transported me into another time, another world in a way that surprised me. Another great memory is the band of wanderers party that happened Friday night this year - we walked through the night, the group stopped, the musicians started playing, and we all danced in the middle of a dark road, while more friends just appeared out of night; again a moment when time was kinda suspended. It could have been 500 years before our days, or 500 years after our days, it could have been Cooper's Lake, it could have been somewhere along the Gypsy trail - time or place didn't matter.

Oh, and what a lovely poem about what sounds like a true Pennsic adventure!

Yes it bears repeating! Thanks for sharing it!

I've shared stories of this Pennsic. Unfortunately for us and our group this was more of a "Holding Pattern" Pennsic than a "Fun" Pennsic. With all the mishaps and injuries and folks who could not come be with us in our group the spirits were down and while we kept busy and enjoyed each other as best we could we simply couldn't raise our spirits to even have a good old fashioned camp Drama scene where everyone was pissed at everyone else! I'd blame it on any one thing (The lack of campmates due to mundane issues, the forgotten tent parts, the weather, the earlier dates, the weather, the leaky tents, the sugery's that some campmates had right before Pennsic, the injured kids, the weather, the trips to EMS, etc.) but alas no one single thing was to blame.

The high points for me were going to visit some friends and the giving of gifts and reciveing hugs from those I only see once a year at Pennsic. The culmination of which was running what was deemed by others to have been a succesful gathering of Freemasons from all over the known world. The brotherhood and fellowship I shared that Sunday evening was by far enough for me to overlook all the negative parts and carry me thru some of the worst weather and camping problems at Pennsic in years.

Thank you to everyone that I met from Tribes! Each smile, hug, and hello helped to carry me and my family and household thru a truly testing Pennsic.

Teaching newbies that there's no "s" in Wulf Den. He was really really drunk and wanted to be friends with us really badly, I guess, and hailed us very politely. I bet he comes back next year and yells "Hail WulfzDen!!! burp" just to show us. ;-)

One of the most memorable experience this past pennsic was walking to a friends tent at 5 int he morning one morning. calling him to the door of his tent with my most sexy, sultry, 1-900 voice, hearing him scramble out of bed, run to the door and throw the flap of his door open to see my boyfriend standing at the door... to see his face go from a huge smile to the crestfallen look he gave was priceless and worth the early morning walk up that horrible hill :)

Hmm, not a single, "No ****, there I was" story yet.

Pennsic 28. I was dating Sir G. at the time. He'd just taken my friend J. as a squire. G didn't attend that Pennsic. His squire self-appointed himself my bodyguard for the war.

Anyway, our shire's knight marshal had started goofing around with staff slings earlier in the year - if you're not familiar with this weapon, go here: cynewulf.black-panther.org.uk/the....htm

Our shire formed a staff slinger unit, specifically to play in that war's Abbey Battle. I was captain of archers at the time, however, Tanaka gave command to a young man prone to talking the talk without being able to walk the walk. This was an opportunity for this gentleman to shine - or hang himself.

The East did not (and I think still does not) have light archers or other light fighters. We proceeded on the assumption that we would be siege weapons and to comply with the two-man team requirement, each team was comprised of a slinger and loader. J. of course had my back.

Anyway, at the last minute, the marshals decided we were lights and we had to deploy inside the abbey with the combat archers. The abbey consisted of posts with sheet walls - which I couldn't see over. Neither could our commander who was shorter than I was. J. tops my 5'6" by another five inches if he doesn't slouch, so he was directing my fire as he loaded - and you can bet every slinger with a clue was listening to him calling range - "200 feet. 100 feet. Choke up, here they come!"

We got maybe ten minutes of play before the Midrealm overran our position. We retired to the hay bales at the edge of the field and waited for the East to push back. (Great view of the nitty gritty and a good place to cheer some of our heavy friends from!)

And waited. And waited. It was a cool, gray, drizzly day. Suddenly, our commander declared that he wasn't feeling well and our side wasn't going to get back in anyway and picked up his stuff to leave. Desertion in the heat! J and I looked at each other through bar grilles and said in clear, loud, totally p.o.ed unison, "Fine, we're staying." Every last slinger and loader stood up and said, "Me too."

J, being the perfect retainer, is at my elbow (radiating Angry Bearded Guy pheromones as only he can) as I chivvy my unit as close to the abbey as possible. I tell them we've got to get in fast and make it count if our army gives us the chance. I explained the concept of volley fire, something that had never occured to our Fearless Leader, how to call it - and then admitted, "I can't see a damn thing over that wall, J is going to have to call it." "Permission to substitute "MORTAR' for 'Loose!''' he suggested, showing lots of teeth. "They won't know WHAT'S coming over that wall."

So we waited. We were ready. And we never did get back in, more's the pity. We few, we soggy few, we band of tennis ball lobbing slingers. It was fun though.

Okay, this obviously wasn't this year as I wasn't there.

Last night of Pennsic for us (Friday...we were going to leave the following day.) Planning ALL DAY to go to Chalkman, meet up with friends, have a last night blast.

And then right before we were planning on leaving, Vosh, one of the guys in my tribe, got stung by a spider. His ankle swelled all up and it was scary because he's extremely allergic to venom. He took some antihisamine and we hovered over him with an epi pen just in case. He couldn't really travel all the way to Chalkman like that, and I was afraid to leave him alone. Vincent, Katherine, and Aysha were reluctant to leave us alone in camp while they went off and partied (not neccessary, but it was sure nice of them to be concerned) so they stayed behind with us. Just when the night couldn't be any more of a bust, it started into a heavy downpour. Great.

Alchohol is the currency of the Swamp, and we always seem to leave with more than we brought. So sitting under our badly leaking common area tarp, we commenced to cracking bottles. We put Vosh's leg up, put some ice on it, got some snacks, and had our own little party. Ivar eventually showed up looking for us, and joined us. We ended up singing every drinking song we knew long into the night, setting up the dead bottles to catch the streams of water running through the roof.

Vosh was okay, and not much worse for wear. He ended up falling dead asleep in his chair. We never had to jab him, to my vast relief. Chalkman is awesome, but there is no way we could have possibly had more fun together there than we did in our own camp under our leaky tarp.

I just realized, if you'd like to see cartoons of each of the people in my story, you can go to www.paintedwheel.com and go to the "members" page. Since I mention so many of my household, maybe you'll find it fun to see who is who.

I had been at war for a week already and Ursus had just shown up. He immediately trotted off through Tuchux camp with a friend and a bottle of bourbon, and I didn't see him the rest of the night. I woke up around 9 am to the sound of him stampeeding through camp, and our clan leader saying "You are SO in trouble". He poured into the tent to go to bed. I grumbled a few very mean things about him, and got out of bed. Drunken idiot hadn't seen me for a week and he can't even say hello. He just ran off with to cavort in camp and comes back the next morning after light. Needless to say, I was not pleased.

Later that day, I went back to the tent to take a nap, just as he was getting up. Fine with me - I don't even want to sleep next to him at this point. Grumbling again about drunken idiots, I went to sleep. Even in my dreams I was pissed off at him.

I woke up to hearing him come in the tent. He laid down behind me. I was still very groggy, but finding myself grumbling still. He tapped my shoulder, saying "Honey..." I half didn't notice him, half pretended not to, still trying to sleep. Then he said to me "Will you marry me?" That will wake a woman up. I turned to him and said "In a heartbeat." That was over five years ago, and while he still may be a drunken idiot at times, he's my drunken idiot.

I still think he did it to get out of the doghouse.

Okay. I got one. Again, not this year.

Bunch of us were on our way home from a party, and the plan was to head back to camp, ditch our musical instruments, and then head over to Chalkman for the rest of the night (was threatening rain). Suddenly, a chain got pulled across the road and it was demanded we pay "the Talent Tax."

The residents of the camp nearby were making people on the road entertain in some way to pass by.

We were like, "Oh, heck, we can do this." I mean, we had a large band of people and a wagonload of noisy toys. So we pulled out some drums and started with a heavy drum cadence, and I heard someone say "Feh, another drum circle." :-DDDD It so happened the song we played started out with a heavy candence. So they were pretty shocked when we started singing. They dug it! People traveling our way on the road were going "You guys ROCK! Where are you going?" And all we could say was..."Well, we're actually going to listen to the music at Chalkman. But thanks!" It's always really, really cool when people are into what you are doing. :-)

And just when we thought the night couldn't get any more fun...when we walked into Chalkman, the Hot Irish Sausage folks were happy to see us, and called out "Painted Wheel is here!" Nothing like having people you pretty much totally respect and like greet you like that when you walk into your favorite pub. Wow! :-D

You know, I should probably have mentioned that one of the guys in our group was a newbie at his first Pennsic. He'd never played drums, and he'd never played with us.

We thrust a spare djembe into his hands and said "Just keep up." He did quite well.

Now he's got his own drum and plays at drum circles. He's quite good!

One year, the first time we camped next to Tir Thalor, I stopped by to visit. I was proud of the two cases of mead I had brought, but when I entered their camp, I saw their table covered with huge bottles holding 30 or 40 gallons of mead!! They were great fun and freely shared their meads. Most camps shared light beer and strange mixed drinks at the time, so their camp was an eye opening experience. (until later, when my eyes were barely little slits)

So no shit, there I was Pennsic 25, my first war. At the time I lived in Ostgardr. For those who don't know where that is, it's located right by the solar showers on the ghetti. At my first war, my entire garb collection consisted of 5 tabards, 5 monk robes to go under the tabards, some old crappy hand-me-down boots, and that's it! No cloak. Nothing to keep me warm.

So it's my first night of heavy drinking at my first Pennsic. I stopped by a few of the camps that seemed open and full of activity, among the stops were Vlad's, Timberwolfe, and Time Pyrates, (who no longer exist). After declaring war on my liver for several hours I stumbled back up the hills unsure of where home was or how to get there....at this juncture, I didn't know how big Pennsic was or have any idea how to navigate it. My feet were hurting, I ran out of smokes, and it was cold. I remember being frightened because I was too drunk to take care of my self, too tired to walk, and too cold to even think straight.

After 3 of 4 falls on a rocky road, I decided it was smarter to crawl...so there I am a drunk, frozen monk and crawling through the mud for what I now reckon I was about 1/4 mile. A slight rain began to fall and I had gone from a shiver to a shake.

Suddenly I hear this angelic voice, "Um, are you ok?"

In a whiny and meek voice I reply, "Noooooooo"

She comes over to me and helps me to my feet. Oddly enough she was sitting at a table at the outskirts of her camp. My angel helps me into a chair and makes me promise not to go anywhere. I don't. In what seemed like seconds, she re-appeared with a cloak and blanket and two packs of camels. After feeding my addiction, she disappeared only to re-appear with a bowl of hot soup and a gallon of water. We talked throughout the night into the next afternoon. I finally began my search for home and found it. I went many times to look for her again but was never able to find her. All I knew was that her name was Mina.

More than five years later, I was at War of the Roses, an event in Mariaville, NY near Albany. I was in a camp having a conversation when from a tent someone asks, "Is that Danx?"

                    "Yeah...who is that?"

ZipZipZip, out comes Mina! We exchanged huge hugs and information and have stayed in contact since.

She will always be my fondest memory of Pennsic. Her generosity and kindness touched me and still does to this day. I still don't remember what we talked about , all I remember is feeling like she saved me. I will always be thankful for her and that evening.

This year it was conspiring with Linda Cooper to get my sponsor (I am a Ward to a Household) his AoA after something like 30 years in the SCA. Going into East Kingdom Royal to present the petition. We had the camp set up as if the East Kingdom royalty was going to grant Linda some sort of award. When the herald called out my sponsor's name instead, the look of disbelief on his face was priceless. The glisten in his (and a few other) eyes in camp at the end of the award was also a precious memory never to be forgotten...

But now I can gloat for MANY years that we got him really good! And I will...

My most memorable expereince this year was having our tent cave in on top of me and my boyfriend in the wee hours of the morning. Let it be known...those easy-ups are not meant for regular camping! It collected enough rainwater in the corners that the whole tent collapsed! Luckily we weren't hurt by the bent and twisted aluminum poles that crashed down. Our campmates helped us out with an extra tent, and the hands and help to pull the old tent down. I got the most joy out of ripping that easy-up into teeny-tiny pieces and then dragging it to the dumpster! Even worse, i'd worked for days before war to sew canvas walls for it, to make it look more period! ah well, new sheet walls!
