I need a bed...

Can anyone give me some ideas and sources for the constructing or purchasing of a bed that would enable me to level my mattress on a sloping campsite?

First question is just HOW sloping is sloping? To overcome the gradual grade where we cmap on teh serengheti at Pennsic I have a bunch of scrap 1x4's and other 1x scraps from cut off shelves etc. that I can stack up to level the bed. For a few years we were elsewhere and I hauled a few of those concrete Deck blocks for one end of the bed. Seriously considered leaving them behind for the price then. I've kept them though. since we moved campsites though I've not needed to haul them. I think they could be purchased locally too though? You can see my current bed in my profile photos.

As someone who camps on runestone hill...

one of my campmates has a bed that has holes drilled in different places along the legs that she can level the bed out on our big hill

      i see..
sort of like a adjustable massage table...

down the lenght of the legs, they have a series of holes set ~1 inch apart ... then an other piece of loose wood leg (also with holes) is attached for hight requirements with two wing-nuts and bolts for each leg.

thing is, Kirstin, and I (we are camp mates), have no tools... to build said bed...

so one would need to be purchased.

If someone wanted to make one and sell it, I'm sure she would love to buy it. I know i need to buy one!

The slope is quite strong. I had a bed last year, made from a mundane metal bedframe, we took the bottoms off of the legs and put in foot and ahalf long 1 inch threaded rods, and then put huge bolts on it to move the bed up and down to level it, and had rubber feet on the bottoms of the threaded rods. There was at least a foot difference in the leg height from one side of the bed to the other to make it anywhere near level. The feet want to go through the tarp, and the bed isn't all that sturdy.

But nonetheless, everyone in camp had to come marvel at my bed, probably because i dragged them in to show them gleefully... it teeters, it rocks (even with just me in it..) ... My BF at the time built this for me, as he has tools and such. He and I are no more, and I am wanting a more sturdy bed, you know, just in case, i like, maybe, roll over in my sleep or something....but i have no tools to make one with ... so i too am wanting to buy a bed made from wood, that can level....

any enterprising gentlemen out there with tools interested in making and selling 2 beds... full sized....???

PM me. We may be able to fit it into our build schedule and make a couple. I will need to talk with the other guys. Also, we would need some dimensions.

If we can fit it in, I am sure we could come up with a fair price.

Ystll - You out there? What do you think?

I need details. How high off the ground would she like said bed, and how much adjustment would she need?
12 inches? 18?. I am sure I can build, a solid adjustable bed. Full size, queen, or King even. If she has space we can make it a canopy even.
Made from solid wood. Using 6 inch steel bolts as fasteners. Bed should hold over 1000 lbs of weight. Very sturdy. The long rails would be 7 feet long. If you want a canopy it could be made at height you want. One person can put it together, but easier for two. A number of our camp mates use these same beds minus the adjusters at home all year round. I think adjustments every 2 inches would make it sturdier for longer life. I would hate to see it fall apart at the 20 year mark. Look at my pictures in my profile for things that we build. I can fit in time wise, and price I would prefer to discuss in private messages. We can do the finish of your choice of course, but we are partial to our burnination finish.

We have used the DALSELV bedframe from Ikea and have had wonderful success with it as it packs down practically flat (headboard, footboard and roll-up slats). We manage the uneven terrain of our campsite by using shims under the affected legs. (these can be bought at your local big-box hardware store for about $3 a bundle.) Once we set the bed up, we put a double width of shims under each leg until its even, and then we duct tape the shims together so they form a block and the tape provides the appropriate traction to keep the bed leg from falling/sliding off. So, after the inital cash outlay for the bed (about $100 from Ikea), we just have to spend about $6 on shims each year and manage it onsite. The shims we don't use get used elsewhere in camp for similar purposes among our camp mates. Oh, and I use an Aerobed air mattress on top the frame itself, cushioned by an old blanket. yay for no big bulky futon mattress to schlep to/from Pennsic! Theres even enough room underneath the bed for storage bins, so is a win-win-win scenario in my book.

Good luck and see you there!

Why don't you try and terrace off the land you plan to sleep on then any bed you have could be used elsewhere as well.Just a thought ......

I once made a rope bed that was reversible: You could use it upside down. It was about a foot shorter / taller, depending on which way it was set up. I found that on slopes, I could put two legs normal, and two legs upside down, and it would sit closer to upright. From there, a few bits of wood make it right. That way, you can use the same bed at other events, on level ground.

I debated making two more legs that would split the difference at half a foot, but never got around to it. Then I could have mixed and matched for three different heights.
