Sat, July 26, 2008 - 1:29 PMI', keeping an involuntary schedule in my head:
"So, tonight is 0 night. everyone is in the parking lot getting their drunk on and visiting family they haven't seen in years"
"Well, it's saturday morning, my camp (Vlad's) is on barn duty helping groups with land. I bet so-n-so is there"
"So, it's noon. Land grab is about done"
"Tents are going up!! omg!!!"
soon I'll be here at home sewing my ass off while my mind is off with my friends at Pennsic visiting all old and new friends"
8 days!!!! How are you surviving? Gosh, I've got 4 days until I go and I have already played with the idea of upgrading my flight day!!! -

Sat, July 26, 2008 - 8:19 PMi was traveling along I-80 today, and saw quite a few cars packed to the gills with pennsic stuff.
i am a bit sad this year though, as i am not able to make the trek back to home :( and i am extremely jealous of those who ARE going lol.. but it was great to know that its that time of year again, and to see people practically racing their way off to war :)
i shall be returning next year though, come hell or high water.
hope everyone going has a great time though!

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 6:35 AMThe report for Sunday is that the weather was beautiful. Perfect if you were in the shade.
I'm all alone today at work. Everyone is at a politcal shindig. I'm going at lunch to have my eyelashed tinted. Tomorrow is a full day with everyone in the office. Wednesday is a half day and then I'm using up the last of my Family Leave time. Woo hoo! -

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 3:09 PMWe had some difficulty getting my husband out on Saturday, missing keys for the trailer hitch lock and the cab of the truck. We did solve the key problem but it was too late for him to get to Pennsic at a decent hour for setting. Sounds like he would have been setting up in the rain if he had left than. So he ended up getting a early start on Sunday. Meanwhile my daughter and I our sitting at home watching TV and a severe thunderstorm with hail comes through. I called my husband to let him know and he tells me how wonderful it is up there. :-(
Then today at work a gentleman who works in my building who also attends Pennsic stopped by my desk and asked 'What are you doing here?" He just got back from land grab. I don't know what name he uses at Pennsic but his name is Chris and he camps with Greenwood. Anyone know him?
I'm taking Thursday off as a sleep in then run errands day, since my Dad can't leave until Friday. I'm tempted to drive up on my own on Thursday, but then I have to drive home alone versus riding home with my hubby.

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 6:51 AMI called my best friend yesterday (he's our land grab guy) to see how things were going, and he told me something cool.
Usually our block(E-18) is the LAST one to be done with land grab, some years it has just been wretched.
This year our block's land grab was done in an HOUR!!!
Whoo-hooo!!!!!!!!
See you all Wed!! -

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 8:26 AMJust did Land Grab Weekend and am back here at work for 3 more days!!! Waaaah !!
So, Zero Night - the weather was BEAUTIFUL ... drank lots of wine ... .gave lots of hugs ... crashed out at about 2:30a in the passenger seat of my van. Woke up at the crack of dawn ---6:30a !! Ugh....took Advil ... drank tons of water ... good to go.
Saturday, Land Grab for our block went off without a hitch - we were all driving our cars onto our block by 10:45a for set up.....the weather on Saturday was great for setting up camp -- it was dry, partially sunny, rather warm, but breezy.... We had our camp set up by 6:30p -- the kitchen, the gate, our tents ... then I took a fabulous shower up top in the shower house (I was the ONLY one in there - no waiting in line! Woo hoo!!!). It did rain like a freakin' monsoon twice on Saturday night...but this year, I came totally prepared -- I waterproofed the outside and inside of my tent and have a huge tarp OVER my tent - and it didn't leak - I was soooo happy to be dry.
Sunday - oh what a nice day .... the sun was out - it was warm and toasty ... we walked around and visited friends for most of the day - then I napped for an hour -- got up and left site at 5p.
Can't wait til FRIDAY MORNING !!! -

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 11:31 AMSame here Mel! Arrived onsite with the girls in my van and the trailer behind me and the wife following in her van about 10:30 pm collected some hugs and visited until about 12:30 after all the paperwork was done and crawled in and went to sleep. Arose to the sounds of drunk irishmen screaming profanities needlessly. Got my shoes on and went to the nearest porta castle to relive myself to find my first NSTIW at Pennsic moment and then off to breakfast. Grabbed my land agent crap and headed for the barn, collected a few more hugs and found the folks from my block. Filled out the "stuff" stood in line and followed instructions so we did NOT have to sing I'm a little tea pot. LOL! The guy with the prosthetic leg was a hoot though! Traipsed down to our land figured out our corners and went to retrieve the family. We had two of three tents set up when the first rains hit. Finished the third in the rain as a fourth arrived. Started the setup on that one in between showers and had it up as well by dark. final touches on it lasted until midnight and it is up but not pretty. Sunday dawned bright and early after the nights lighting show and showers. Got the shower running and the sheet walls up. Found our old sump from three years ago while digging this years sump. Used the sod to cover up someone elses old sump hole and fill in the rodent holes after i tripepd and fell in the old sump. (ouch) At 4pm sunday the parking lots were visibly empty but with close to 25,000 square feet of singles camping I'm sure folks were keeping their cars in camp longer than normal.
Overall it seemed like not a lot of people there? usually we had lots of traffic but not so this year. Still had tin hats speeding in carts and I'll be taking names and numbers once I get back onsite. Pet peeve of mine with the kids around our area. -

I thought we followed directions and yet we still had to wave like princesses and walk elegantly towards the table.
I'll take that over the "tea pot" song.

Re: War Report!!!
Wed, August 6, 2008 - 5:31 AMAgreed. I was originally scheduled to be there for War Week, as per usual. Then I had to change jobs, so my Pennsic time was cut to half a week (I would have been heading up right this minute in fact). Now, I won't be able to get there until Friday afternoon/evening, and I have to pack up Saturday morning. Real bummer.
Next year will be better though! I must keep telling myself that. -

Re: War Report!!!

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 6:25 AMI think I've covered this elsewhere. my blog? other posts? In my head? I don't remember.
Disappointing because I busted MY ass to make Pennsic as comfortable for others. A few in my camp appreciated the sacrifices I made so that they amy enjoy their Pennsic but I ahd precious little time to enjoy it myself. The middle weekend was my only time to enjoy and after it was said and done it was but a few short fleeting hours even though i was there for 48. To arrive and have to continue settting up or arranging stuff that weekend sucked. To arrive back onsite last thursday to know that it was solely to start packing up and tearing down. the fact that others in camp did nothing to help tearing down and packing up sucked more on top of that.
So disappointing was not getting to a single party. Disappointing was a sick child and a party that ran LOOONG after quiet hours. BAD neighbors. They've NEVER EVER been that loud or inconsiderate before. If you are going to throw a party folks, INVITE your neighbors. Otherwise they will be pissed that you are making all that noise. Two demerits for you!
Not seeing a singe battle. Not getting to TW at all. Not getting to shop at all. Jsut a very disappointing War for me. Like going all teh way to Florida and staying onsite at Disney and not getting to ride any rides or even go to the parks. Why bother? -
-
Re: War Report!!!
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 9:06 AMDamn, Valentin, that SUX! Why was it left up to you to play camp mommy?
I think I would have went on strike or something. That's just not right. -

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 11:31 AMSomeone has to do it right? Never again! I'll put in the work so that my family and friends can have fun but not at the expense of my own fun. The lady that normally organizes things couldn't come due to the date change (sigh) and work obligations. I had made an obligation to be there middle weekend and my lady wanted to be there the whole second week. I siply did not have enough vacation time with her sister getting married in two weeks. So I weekended it. It worked but I missed so much.

Re: War Report!!!
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 7:07 PMI bust my ass every year to make Pennsic as comfortable as possible for others, so I know exactly how you feel!! I have been trying very hard to get some of my campmates to lift a finger. I "herd cats" mundanely with little effort, but to get some folks to simply fill tiki torches for one evening is nigh-impossible. I don't want to ruin anyone's vacation, but I'd like to enjoy mine as well.
I think I would love Pennsic more if my SO was not a land agent. Land agents are the unsung heroes of this event.
Fortunately a few made my 30th birthday (Monday of war week) very special with a camp dinner and cake and cookies from World Order. (BTW, those are great cakes!!)
I'm also sorry that others kept you and your family from getting the rest that they needed to get well. Again, I fully understand what this is like. I camp near the lake. I expect noise. But DAMMIT, bagpipes and darbukas way past 4:30 a.m. is just wrong. Our immediate neighbors are great, but some of the folks down the hill are inconsiderate are really inconsiderate.
I hope that Pennsic 38 is better for you. -
-
Re: War Report!!!
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 7:36 PMWow, Jenda. Sounds rough. Perhaps you should institute a camp policy? In my group (about 40 people, though way back when I started we were more like 20) a chore list is laid out every night at dinner time. On the list are tasks such as camp clean up, fire god, tiki torch filling, ice runs, etc. People sign up for what chore they want for the next day. It used to end up about one chore every other day, but we have so many people now its more like one chore every three or so days.
Quite often, if someone sees something needs doing, it actually gets done BEFORE the actual person responsible gets too it.
If you dont pitch in help, you dont come back (or worse, the Matriarch assigns you tasks you DONT want). Pretty simple policy ;-) -
-
Re: War Report!!!
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 7:59 PMThanks, Basina. Your suggestions are well considered and have been tried to a degree. The tough part is that most of my camp is a dressing room. People have their own schedules and only return to camp to change clothes or sleep. Plus we never know when people will "land".
In reality, I should not hold people up to my standards. I am very much a details person and I will look for things that need to be done and do them. It's really not fair to assume that of others.
Still, the people in my camp are good people. However, due to lack of completing tasks, we live pretty primitively compared to other camps.
-
Re: War Report!!!
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 10:22 AMI cannot imagine our camp leaving all the work to one person. We divide tasks as necessary, but it's as simple as "oh, the garbage can is full. I guess I had better take care of that". It takes five minutes, and that includes walking to the dumpster and back!
We don't have any actual chore lists, though we might next year, and our strictest rule is that the cook DOES NOT wash dishes! -
-
Re: War Report!!!
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 11:09 AMNormally that is the case. However a few folks seem to take advantage of it. As was said by someone else scheduling when folks come and go from War can be tough too. There were two of us that were weekenders only. She however did nothing to contribute to the group. Ice runs, garbage runs, cooking cleaning, general camp tidying, Set up and breakdown. Money towards ice and money towards propane.
What else is there? Everyone contributed to the drinks (alcoholic and non) Most everyone that ate in camp contributed to the food. I'd like to say that if someone cooked they did not do dishes but since I wasn't there I cannot tell for sure if that happened this year or not? Since camp was weird with fewer folks it was a totally off year. We went thru less propane on some things and determined that we have propane leaks on some of the stoves so we went thru about the same as last year.
My lady was a trouper and took on a lot of things I did not see. A few otehrs I know cooked a LOT even though we did have a formal "sort of" meal plan. I'm not sure how well it worked. We fell way short on camp cleanliness as far as I was concerned and could see when I was there. However when I returned to camp last thursday and saw the trash can overflowing with more than a mornings worth of garbage i was less than pleased. It was obviously a few days worth that no one had bothered to take care of. It's no wonder we had lots of bugs this year.
What is required is someone to monier the camp (camp mommy or daddy) and politely herd folks to doing something that needs done. It also takes a camp that realizes they need to pitch in or there won't be a camp and not be pissy when asked to do somehting around camp regardless of who else is doing or not doing.
-
-
Re: War Report!!!
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 11:11 AMOur camp has camp points. Everyone is required to do at least 3 points worth of chores during war week. This includes cooking, cleaning camp and taking out trash, refilling tiki torches, starting the campfire, etc. Works out well and everything maintains nicely -
-
Re: War Report!!!
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 7:30 AMWe tried a similar system this year after our usual camp rules (Don't be a dick & If you see something needing to be done, do it) failed with a new wave of campers in recent years. It took a lot of cat-herding to organize it and was stressful for the land-agent/benevolent camp dictator (me). Sadly (?) the group pains seemed to LOVE the discipline, but I hated having to be in a position to organize it all (after doing the bulk of camp setup) and to check to make sure people fulfilled their assignments. I also got sick of people coming to me with simple questions that were explained in the detailed "how-to" sheets (laminated and hanging in the main shade area for reference anytime).
*sigh* -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
