A Requiem for The Chocolate Milk

The rumors are flying around the internets this week; the Fisher Dairy is no longer and that means no more chocolate milk. A sad day for all afficianados. Hopefully a suitable replacement can be found.

I was helping a friend figure out tentage when I stumbled upon a page put together by my first barony that I thought was EXCELLENT for helping people figure out what they need and what to take into consideration for any SCA camping event.

first pennsic/garb worries

So, this year will be my first pennsic. Being a bit of a geek, I did a lot of research. Unfortunately or fortunately, some of it was on the web. I decided to sew the majority of my own garb as it's much cheaper to buy some nice fabric and a pattern and make it yourself then to spend lots of money for something that might not fit me right anyway. My issue? I have heard two sides as to garb when it comes to pennsic. Some people say any reasonable attempt is cool. Many say that being a garb snark/garb natzi is not only acceptable, but should be expected. I am not too worried about my fabrics (I don't want to roast in the heat, so NO synthetic fibers though they are cheaper), but I bought McCall's and Simplicity patterns to get back into the swing of things with sewing (I had not done any sewing for nearly 8 years). I KNOW they are not 100% period, but I thought they would be close enough with some very minor alterations (such as using different fabrics and cording instead of elastic in certain places). I'm wondering if maybe I should have gone with buying clothes and having less and living with the fact that most would be far too short for me (I am nearly 5'10"-NOTHING fits right when you are my height). Am I stressing over nothing? I thought making a resonable attempt would be OK until I continued searching, now I worry nothing I bring will be good enough.

BUYER BEWARE

vintage_silk_wraps on Ebay

This is a store on ebay for Buyer BE WEAR
I was bidding on a lot of 6 skirts in which I was winning with a wonderful price so I thought. After the bidding got to $100, the seller put a BUY NOW price in the site so anyone that was bidding and wanted the lot of 6 for $89.00 could purchase it cheaper but the highest bidder was locked into paying the higher price. I paid ASAP and contacted the seller - ask if he would not make up the difference with sending extra wraps - just told me "TO BAD not he fault the bidding got so high"
So I left them a natural comment - and explain the change in auction after price was over $100. In return they give me a negative comment and misleading information my comments. I contacting him asking why the negative when all I did was be a great buyer by over paying within 10 min of the auction ending and only asking for him to balance the wrong doing on his part. Again "TOO BAD" "YOUR FAULT"
My reply...I will take my business and many other with me. HAVE A NICE DAY!

So with all that said - BUYERS BEWEAR....please please please....from one Tribal Goddess to another..PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SALER. There are many other seller on ebay - this guy does not deserve the belly dancer dollars!

Any questions......just me~~~~

I know, I know.. there's already a post about this, but I wanted to put the date right out there in front of ya! We're getting more class submissions, but the roster is still pretty empty compared to most years. If you haven't gotten your class submitted you have until Friday, May 2 to do so or it won't be in the book, nor will it receive any kind of priority scheduling.
Custom Panther Pavilion for Sale - Period Marquee

Panther Primitives Marquee Rectangular Pavilion w/ COMPLETE setup package

Used as early as the Renaissance Period and still a popular design today, the marquee is appropriate for virtually all historical eras of re-enacting from Medieval through the American Fur Trade.

- 22ft x 27ft without ropes, 25ft x 30ft with ropes - BIG Tent! Custom job. AWESOME Pavilion!
- Canvas is white 13oz Flame Retardant Sunforger canvas. Toughest canvas on the market! Roof has purple trim on the Chivalry style dags/scallops and brass peak grommets.
- Room Divider - Make it like a mullet. Business up front, party in the back! Split your tent into a business AND sleeping area in style. Or have 2 rooms for whatever you desire. - Divider comes with a built-in door. Can be tied closed for privacy or open for full disclosure.
- Wooden Poles - All in excellent shape. 2 center upright poles and the ridge pole with steel sleeves for adjustment, in addition to the poles all around the perimeter.
- Ropes with Wooden Sliders + EXTRA
- Wrought Iron Stakes + EXTRA
- Canvas ground cloth with tarp sewn into the bottom. DELUXE version. When used with the sod flap, completely keeps the moisture and bugs out.
- 6ft high walls - with sod flap attached to the bottom of the walls to keep the rain and dirt out. Walls wrap around for full enclosure. Really nice for keeping cold rain and gusts out. - Ties all around the walls for easy tying to the poles to keep your walls firmly in place.
- Double stitched seams and pole holes every 3 feet.
- "Seam Engineered" seams - Here's what the Panther site says about that: This is also called “Skeletal Framework Design”, and what it means is that your pole positions (grommets or loops) are placed at every seam instead of at measured intervals around the tent’s perimeter. Benefits: All your roof seams will automatically line up with your wall seams, so your tent has a more symmetrical look. Also, because your poles are closer together, and because they are all lined up with your seams you can get a more rigid set up on a large tent such as a marquee. All of your support poles are about 33” apart from each other on this style of tent and only full width panels of canvas are used.

This tent has only seen ONE season and is in FANTASTIC shape! It was absolutely fabulous for keeping us cool when it was hot and keeping out the chill when it was windy. I am really loath to sell this tent because I love it so much. It is just too big for our current needs. When it was purchased we needed something rather large, so we had Panther custom make it for us, and boy we're we IMPRESSED! What an awesome tent! Full deluxe package with almost all the bells and whistles as you can see above. Original purchase price was $5500.

I wish I had some full sized pictures of the tent, but I've included some examples of the Panther marquee tent. Also, in the tent1.jpg and tent2.jpg pictures, you can see the divider in the back. What you see is only ONE THIRD of the entire tent. This thing is BIG!
IMAGES:
http://www.bigdaddygypsy.com/bigdaddygypsy/images/tent/

Go in with your fighting company or unit to get this tent and make your headquarters/party central. With the divider you can have a commander's room and a grunts room. Use it to expand your business (we got comments every event on how nice it was, hooray for bragging rights!) and hold more stock while sleeping in comfort knowing your stock is safe just a tent wall divider away. Or just buy it and look SWANKY at your events. Perfect tax refund purchase!

Buy this almost new, HUGE, spectacular, custom tent off me for only $3997 plus shipping.

Email is daddytristan@gmail.com for any questions. Thanks!

Greetings fellow Scadians,
I will be attending Pennsic for the first time this year. I have a household who has invited me to camp, so I have a place to stay. I was just wondering if the veterans out there have any general advice for a Pennsic newbie? Any ideas on what not to miss there, and what to avoid etc. I am also new to tribes and would be interested in adding friends to my list.

Were you at the Astrolabe Class at Pennsic 36?

Greetings:

Did you go to a class on the Astrolabe, the confused one? Where you got a working Astrolabe?
Well, I taught the class, and would like to have a second class this year, for those who attended the first class.
One where we go to know the Astrolabe better, and practice using it.

So....if you attended last year, still have your Astrolabe and bring it with you;
lets set a date to meet somewhere at Pennsic and have an informal "So, What do I do with this Astrolabe?" round table.
You may have learned somethings I don't know, and I would like to learn.

Peace,

Pennsic Project: Cart

I'm thinking of making a small cart to haul things in at War. It needs to be simple to make, lightweight but sturdy, small enough to be handled easily by a small woman but large enough to haul grocery-run items or possibly a cooler, and preferably collapsible so that it can be transported in the trunk or back seat of a car. Anyone have ideas for me?

almost everybody has something that stands out for them from a Pennsic past.
I ask that you share your story, to help inspire new people who have not yet experianced
Pennsic, not that anyone who has ever been there needs to justify taking a week or two off work to time travel ...... but there are always new people!!!

I will get us started : at my first pennsic my buddy got so drunk he locked himself in a porta-castle and passed out...... I thought about leaving him there but in good conscious could not.
So after much yelling and pounding on the porta-castle, a nice pirate saw what was happening and told us his friend did the same thing the night before, he smiled and popped the lock on the porta-castle........and just like that the whole "welcome home" thing made sense!!! No shit there I was............

Greetings,

This year our household is going to take part in the Land Grab at Pennsic 37. As we all know the larger the group the better chance you have of getting a decent piece of land. From our house we currently have 22 people all set to pre-reg. I am looking for another group / household that would like to join camping forces to increase our numbers. If your interested please let me know. We have a household camp manual that I will send to you so that you know what to expect from us.

Thank you,
Indian/Middle Eastern/Tribal Outfits (X posted)

I have two complete outfits(tunic and pants) that need to find new homes. I personally never worn them (meant for my smaller sister but she decided she didn't want to get into dancing or the SCA after I bought them) but they did come from India so who knows. They are clean and come from a smoke free home.

The first one if beautiful burgundy, gold, and black set with gorgeous bands of embroidery at the neck and two plackets of embroidery at the waist. There is gold piping at neck and sleeve opening as well as gold stitching at bottom of sleeve. Comes with burgundy chalwar(pants) with filigree stitching at ankle opening.

The second is a lovely red, white, and gold batik with a front yoke with extensive trim work. Very much an Afghani nomad style of tunic. The sleeves also have a trimmed cuff at the opening and are poofy in this style. The bottom of the tunic has a trimmed band along the bottom to match the yoke on the front. This outfit comes with matching chalwar(pants) as well, which are made of the fabric and with the same trim detailing as the tunic.

Both outfits are made of an easy to care for and comfortable cotton.

I am asking $125 + $15 for shipping and packaging for each but am willing to take offers.

Here are the measurements for each:

Burgundy Batik Set-
~Tunic~
Sleeve Length: 13"
Bicep: 16"
Sleeve Opening: 12"
Bust: up to 36"(at 36" it will be tight)
Waist: about same as bust measurement--some pleating at waist front so could fit larger waist
Shoulder to hem(Length): 38"
~Pant~
Waist: up to 44"
Length: 40"
Ankle: 11"
Waist to crotch: 17"

Red, White, and Gold Batik Set-
~Tunic~
Sleeve Length: 15"
Bicep: 24" (sleeve meant to be poofy)
Sleeve Opening: 10 1/2"
Bust: up to 36" (will be tight at 36")
Waist: about same as bust but could fit larger waist depending on shoulder to waist measurent(waist could fall where the pleated shirt is)
Shoulder to Hem(Length): 32"
~Pant~
Waist: up to 48"
Length: 35"
Ankle: 10"
Waist to crotch: 13"

Here is the url for pictures: http://yaminagdh.myphotoalbum.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=album02
Either message me here or privately if you are interested.

La Notte, Teribus, and Drum Classes

Believe it or not, La Notte will be making a rare appearance in Golden, Colorado at Elevation on Friday, April 18, 2008. Paul Ash (the "hurdy gurdy guy") and I (Nevik with my drums) wll be bringing a couple of extra friends to fill out the sound and will be playing a good chunk of the "La Notte Dei Cavalieri" CD as well as other material. If you enjoy belly dance rhythms and the haunting sounds of the hurdy gurdy, then this show might be just what the doctor ordered. There are no future plans for shows so this may be your one chance to see La Notte live. Paul and I truly enjoyed performing at Pennsic years ago, but living so far apart has made it difficult to work together with any regularity.

For those that might not have heard La Notte, here's a link to a small mp3 clip from the 1999 CD release: http://www.legionofdoumbek.com/audio/lanotte_moorishdance_excerpt.mp3

My apologies to anyone who finds this post off topic. We have many SCA friends and have performed at Pennsic for years and thought it might be of interest to you. :-)

We look forward to seeing some of you at the show!
Nevik

p.s. For those in the Cincinnati area, I am bringing Teribus (medieval great pipes & drums) to town on March 22. More info at http://www.gaiananda.net/

p.s.s. I will also be teaching drum classes at Pennsic again this year so if you have any special requests for topics, feel free to contact me. :-)

WANTED: Tent Rental Co. Recommendations for Pennsic

Hi! Long-time lurker here . . .

For the past 5 years or so I've been renting a tent for Pennsic, first with Grimms, then with Classic Tents. I'm just not good at putting up a tent myself and would rather not totally rely on others to do it for me as wonderful and kind as others have been in the past. I like the idea of someone else putting them up and, especially, taking them down afterward.

Last year, I was OK with the tent from Classic (the year before they were better) but the people in charge of my encampment said they were difficult to deal with.

Has anyone out there had good experiences with Classic or other tent rental companiess (sizes 10 x 10 or 12 x 12).

Thanks so much for any suggestions or recommendations!
Known World Players auditions for "Medea" (x-posted)

The Known World Players announces auditions for this year's Pennsic
performance of Euripides' "Medea". Rehearsals take place in the
afternoons at Pennsic War 37 with our performance the final Friday
evening of War Week.

Auditions will be held at the following events:

Midrealm:
Masque of Courtly Love (February 23). Event website:
http://alderford.org/events/masque2008
Royal University of the Midrealm (March 29). Event website:
http://midrealm.org/greyhope/events/RUM/index.htm

East Kingdom:
Noisemakers Schola III (February 23). Event website:
http://www.eastkingdom.org/event-detail.html?eid=1522

There is no monologue required to audition, however, if you would like
to prepare one that is fine. Auditions will consist of scene readings.
All roles are open.

FAQ:
*What are the Known World Players?
We are a troupe of actors who perform period plays in a period fashion
at the Pennsic War. This will be our 8th year in existence.

*Who do I talk to for more information?
You can contact the founding director, THL Tyzes Sofia (called Zsof) at
zsofsky@gmail.com, or for questions about the East Kingdom auditions
contact Master Lorcan Dracontius at lorcan@dracontius.net.

*I'm worried about the time commitment at Pennsic. Can you tell me more
about the rehearsals?
We rehearse every afternoon from the middle Sunday of Pennsic through
our performance the final Friday of Pennsic. The larger the role, the
more time required at rehearsals. If you would still like to perform but
with a smaller role, please let us know. A large role will require your
presence at every rehearsal.

*I can't make the auditions, but still want to be a part, how can I do this?
We are more than willing to do auditions over the phone, or set up time
at an event either one of us will be at. If you can't make an audition,
please don't let that stop you from contacting us.

*Do you have a website?
Sure! Head on over to http://www.karolinekramer.com/kwplayers

Have any other questions? Feel free to contact Zsof.

Tent repair at War?

Is there a tent company that comes to Pennsic Wars outfitted with what it takes to repair tents?

I stressed or ripped a few places in my tent last year as I took it down in the rain. It was made by Whispering Winds (or some other company that is now defunct) and is constructed of something like Sunforger colored canvas.

What I would be looking for (optimally) is for someone to come to my site with their sewing machine and tools that first Saturday of land grab and patch the roof before I put the tent up. There is electricity in my camp as well...

I have a sunshade of the same material that I never use that I figure could be used for patch material. The only things needed from the repair person would be some sort of compatible thread and grommets to replace those being patched around/over.

Any suggestions of possible vendors or people on list that do this sort of thing?

Please post your thoughts or feel free to contact me offlist...

Thanks,
Pewter

Looking for Pennsic ME tent volunteers

Hello all! I'm Mihri, your friendly neighborhood Middle-Eastern Class Coordinator for Pennsic. I enjoyed (and I *do* mean that) this job last year and was happy to take it up again this year!! I am looking for some good people to call my team and perhaps a deputy to help me with the task of keeping the Middle-Eastern tent running smoothly this year. The main task is opening and closing the tent on a daily basis and making sure it at least starts out clean in the morning. Since I'm all of 5'2" and the tent is WAY taller than 5'2" I quickly found that this was not a task I should have taken on alone. Fortunately I was able to beg help on a daily basis.

I am hoping this year to assemble a small team of volunteers to help me with the opening and closing as well as the general straightening up of the ME tent. Depending on the size of the team, a schedule can be made where nobody would have to open or close more than a few times during Pennsic. If there's someone out there who'd like to go an extra mile and be my deputy... to supervise some of the openings and closings and to help me with other related tasks, I would be most excited to have such a person!!

If you are interested in being on my team, please drop me a message with your email address and I'll start gathering names to put on my list!!

Real Weddings at Pennsic?

Does anybody know how many real weddings take place at Pennsic each year? Have they been public or private affairs? Over the years I have often heard tales of real weddings happening, but I have never had the privilege of actually attending one.

The reason I ask is that as a hobby I have researched and written several different medieval wedding ceremonies for various cultures and time periods. I also write ceremonies for Pagan or other non-tradition weddings. Making each wedding unique and special is something that is a passion of mine. I could probably even teach a class on how various cultures conducted wedding ceremonies and the different meanings each culture attributed to marriage.

I am also kind of testing the waters, because recently I keep receiving more and more requests to not just write the wedding ceremonies, but also to officiate them as well. I am curious if this would be a service that people would have any interest in at the next Pennsic War. It also doesn’t hurt that I am legally allowed to perform weddings in the state of PA.

Someone is building a giant huge humongous gargantuan gas station on Route 422, between 79 and Curry Road. So, it seems like you'll be able to get gas right there around the corner from Coopers, coming or going.

Also being added are traffic lights when you exit 79 ramps onto 422 and also where the gas station will be. Don't know when station is opening, but it is going up fast.

Regarding Tuchux

Some of you have sent me emails asking me to tell you about Tuchux. So I figured, why not just start a new thread and see where it goes? Food for thought - I can't reveal all of our secrets. Well I could, but I'd have to kill you.

Tuchux were created 32 years ago by Wulf the Mighty, a sense and swordsmith in Pittsburgh, who was at an SCA fighter practice and decided it wasn't his thing. He wanted more of a realistic martial arts type group - dedicated to fighting and being yourself. Philosophical differences regarding fighting rules, styles and personas led him to create a new group - the name of which he got out of Nomads of Gor, book four of that horrid Gor series. (Once again, nothing more than a few names and words came out of the book. The people who do actually live the lifestyle from the book are called Goreans - they're a whole other story, and we get confused with them all the time. Generally, we don't agree with the Gorean way of life. Many Goreans find it upsetting that we don't follow their lifestyle. It's ok. They're allowed to.)

In the Tuchux, there are ten clans, each of which has it's own clan leader, shaman, banner, and personality. Most clans are based in Pittsburgh, although the Kur (my clan) is from Youngstown, Ohio and there are also clans in Indiana and the Maryland/DC area.

The Tuchux are based on fighting and philosophy. Our fighting style is more realistic, with no rules of any kind. We fight as if in a real fight every time. There's none of this "You can't swing your sword outside of a 90 degree arc" or "no secondary weapons". In a real battle, you wouldn't tap your adversary on the shoulder to make sure he saw you and say "Spar, M'lord?" You would smash him into a bloody pulp until he spit his ilver out through his nose, and he would never see it coming. That's how we practice. But alas, if we are at an SCA event, we do follow their fighting rules (well, we try to anyways).

Philosophically, You are either Tuchux or you aren't. We're not everyone's cup of tea, and we're comfortable with that. We are a warrior society, with the sword as the solution to most problems. If we have an issue with someone, we fight it out, shake hands, grab a beer and compliment each other on the bruises we left. We strive for honesty in dealing with each other, sometimes brutal. We don't play games with each other, and we don't try to be something we're not. We are who we are, and if people don't like it, they don't have to come up to camp. We enjoy our solitude and being left alone anyway.

As inspiration, We don't limit ourselves to any one time and place. My clan leader Dagar sees the Tuchux as the embodiment of the Warrior spirit throughout time. And contrary to popular belief, there are tons of history buffs in the tribe. Many of us are influenced by Native American, Mongol, Japanese, or Norse culture. Some of us just like to wear funny clothes and howl at the moon. It's all good.

The wenches - We see the term wench as a high compliment. We are praised and respected by our dogs at all times. Every wench is escorted by at least one dog, especially at night. With the rising incidence of rape and assault at War, our dogs take care of us to make sure that never happens to us. And in 32 years, not one wench has ever been assaulted at War, or anywhere else for that matter. I have no problem with the women who walk out alone at night. I just choose to bring an escort. I'm not about to trust 15,000 people to leave me alone.

The people - We have people from all walks of life in the tribe. From bikers and janitors to lawyers and doctors. We even have a Tuchux in Silicon Valley. No matter what you do in the real wors, you are a Tuchux at all times.

The Rumors - All of them are true. Every last one. In fact, last year someone worte me and asked me if we really do take newbies and duct tape them to trees to leave their genitals out to burn in the sun. I really thought we hid that guy better.

Ok my only complaint that could have been controlled and handled better was about the Damn power hungry people in the golf carts. After having my daughters almost run over by one i started to police Sedalia's Way. Since they felt the need to go full speed past the Porta castles that faced the road. Had one veer towards me as I was yelling at him to SLOW DOWN. After that I took my complaints to security. It took three complaints before they finally let me into the building to actually have my complaints logged. By then it was Thursday of War week. To ahve folks turn their heads anor try to run you donw as you are yelling at them to slow down but otherwise not acknowledge youa t all is down right rude and not within the parameters of how we are supposedly "playing the game". A simple "excuse me my lord" and an apology on the way by would have been enough. I would have understood if they said they were on their way to an emergency. the roaming cars were much easier to deal with than the stupid carts.

Sorry but I needed to vent.

Greetings yinz! Most, if not all of you know of Og. What most of you don't know is our Og has some health issues, hence the reason for this post. What I'm proposing on doing is taking a collection to get Og a 12' Ger or yurt so that he wouldn't have to crawl in and out of a small nylon pimple. (Yes, nylon pimple.) If anyone can help with this endeavor, please e-mail me at wytwich@aol.com with "OG" in the subject line and I can give you the particulars. Any amount will do, I'm just trying to help out one of our Pennsic icons. Thanks for reading this, and hope to hear from yinz soon.

Greetings and Salutations!

It's been a couple months since we all left home for what my camp calls 'the great big beer run' . And it can't be over soon enough!

Anyhow, I've been pseudo searching for pictures from this years Lesbian and Bisexual Ladies' Tea party. My lady campmates and I came up from the swamp to celebrate Lady Lusty's last night as a bachlorette. Both she and I performed (her singing happy birthday in a very special manner, and I with some firehooping) I was wondering if anyone in this group happened to catch the action on film. I would *LOVE* to see pictures and/or video.
please let me know either here or through a private message.
Thank you!!

I am currently planning activities for 'It Takes MY Child to Raze a Village' (a children/adults co-operative event) that will take place in 2008. The autocrat is finalizing the date and location this and next week, it will be somewhere in Canton of Weldlake, Pentamere, Midrealm (Brighton/Howell, MI).
I need to know everyone's favorite Youth/Children's Activities from an event or SCA activity. If you saw something really cool being done, if you or your child really enjoyed something, if you've always wanted to see something done, please let me know (either here or email me at ladyseadhli@gmail.com)

I am cross-posting this in several places on and off tribe.

Did anyone else suffer from Rodent damage to your vehicles after Pennsic this year? I know of one couple that had to tow their vehicle home because of chewed wires and it seems that a week ago when I had my van in for service they found a mouse nest but no chewed wires. I feel lucky I suppose?

Anyhow how to combat this next year? Some moth balls up under the hood? D-con under the car? What?

So was it worth moveing Pennsic up one week?

Seems it put war week right into the rain week (there was great weather the week after Pennsic by the way). It seemed before (most of the time anyways) the first week had the most rain while it rained less during war week.

This years troll was about 11,300+, Last year was 13,000+

So is it really worth changing Pennsic?

I don't think so.

In a few weeks I will be moving back to New York, the northern burtbs for a while. It has been a long time since I have been there, and still longer since I've played SCA there. I need to connect with people eventually, and I thought this would be the bestest place *ever* to start! :-)

Any of you lot in my general neighborhood?

Some nice lady took a photo of me and my twin sister, while we were resting during a rez at the Woods Battle. We're really hoping she's on this board, because we'd love a copy of that photo!!
Neither of us were wearing tabards, but I imagine there aren't a lot of photos out there of twin girls with pigtails in armor.

This actually has an original melody but the rhythm works for any regular blues tune, so I thought I'd share. Once i get it practiced, it will be up on my site.

The After-Pennsic Blues

I spent all my money
So I'd go to Pennsic
my job put on hold yeah
for two weeks of Pennsic
My cats won't forgive me
The weather was brutal
My doc said, "You're crazy!"
Takes weeks to recover,
but I've got those

After-Pennsic-Lonely
Oh-So-Missin'-My-Friends
Workin'-Too-Hard, Damn-Mundania Blues....

It's not even fall yet
That means it's still summer
I could go to Renfaire
But it might be a bummer
My garb is all clean now
Just waitin' for wearin'
My liver's pristine now
And my doctor is swearin',
because I've got those

After-Pennsic-Lonely
Oh-So-Missin'_My-Friends
Workin'-Too-Hard, Damn Mundania Blues....

Oh yeah I'm blue (so blue)
You would be too (you too?)
I miss the mud
the heat
the rain
the pain
the friends I may never see again,
I've got those

After-Pennsic-Lonely
Oh-So-Missin'_My-Friends
Workin'-Too-Hard, Damn Mundania Blues....

(so blue)

(you too?)

Does anyone know where i can purchase a slat bed or have someone make one, preferrably in MD/VA/DC area? I went to war and i swear, i hated the moisture that my air mattress received underneath so i told myself that i would get a bed frame to put my air mattress on for next year. Or do you have a certain way you keep you bedding off the ground. Thank you.

Anyone happen to snap a few pics of clan die fledermaus gatherings during this last pennsic? I had a great time dancing around their campfire with Dragonsong and I have no pictures of those evenings at all....niether do my fellow dancer friends. If someone could post them it would be much appreciated. ~Sarah

I'm particularly looking for PA residents, but anybody who has an answer, please pipe up! This has been nagging me for ages:

Why, in Pennsylvania, are there separate shops for wines&spirits and beer? Why can't you buy everything under one roof?

Made it home from Pennsic very early this morning 8/10. Left a very rainy site...Thursday was the wet day for sure. Over 11,000 by Wednesday 5pm. Humid, hot, damp. One problem is it stayed humid even at nite.......

Hi everyone...I dissappeared from Pennsic during Midnight Madness on second Wednesday. {8-o What happened: heat exhaustion, extreme dehydration -- TWICE -- and a severe case of gastroenteritis, which I am not over yet. That's a stomach bug on steroids. I used to think the worst thing I'd ever have to do at Pennsic is puke into the portacastle. Wrong. The worst thing I've ever done at Pennsic is have to use the portacastle while hooked to an IV...*and* puking in the portacastle.

The worst part, the real worst part, is that I made a few unscheduled visits to the ER due to this, and I have no insurance. {:-(

All the medical people told me that with that kind of humidity and heat, there is no way I could keep up with the fluid loss by drinking water. I was indeed the sun's bitch, and the rain's whipping post! And I know I am far from the only one!

Next year will be better. Won't it? I'll be happy if tomorrow is better!

miserably yours,
Neha aka jackie

Milady lost some items at Pennsic that, remarkably, never made it up to lost and found. She list her collection of Pennsic Medallions from all the Pennsics (and several other events) she's been to, but the most upsetting thing for her that she lost was a set of Horde Cords givent to her by a dear friend, and made my that friend's father before he passed. It is a black and red macrame cord with some sort of animal spine woven into the cord. She thinks she lost them somewhere in the swamp, possibly in or around Kindred, but cannot be sure. If anyone knows if these turn up somewhere, I would appreciate it if I could be contacted here, no questions asked.

Last night I dreamed that I got to War, realized I forgot my garb and drove home to get it. Only to drive back to war to realize I forgot something else and drove home again. Rinse and repeat about a dozen times. From War to my house is about 9 hours so you can see how silly that is.

Anyone else have odd pennsic related dreams?

Special Thanks x post

Financially speaking, I had no business going to this last Pennsic. However, I missed the two prior wars and I’d be damned if I missed another one.

So, I worked my ass off making armour and made some pretty major sacrifices just to get enough gas money to make the trip and pay the sight fee once I arrived home.

Once on sight, I slept in my truck and worked for meals.

“That sucks,” you say?

I say differently.

Because of the sacrifices I made, it was incredibly important that this Pennsic didn’t suck. Thanks to some incredible people, not only did this Pennsic NOT suck, it was one of the greatest events I have experienced to date…and I’ve been around…so that’s saying something.

So, now I want to use this public forum to give thanks to some incredible people who made my two weeks of fantasy that much more special.

Thanks to:

The entire crew from camp Circus of the Damned:

Steven,
you proclaimed yourself to be an asshole but frankly, you failed to live up to this reputation. I’m afraid you treated me with respect and kindness the entire time I was there.

Robin,
Your skills as a caretaker are only surpassed by your abilities to cook incredible food over a camp fire…and that was some INCREDIBLE food. I could not have survived without your kindness.

Hope,
You are aptly named. Your mere presence is simply a delight.

Karyn,
I would be a foolish man if I dared to go shopping without you. I also had the urge to have a tea party with you…I don’t quite know what that’s about. Oh, and I have already spent hours working on my refrigerator magnet poetry.

Dan,
You are one of the most diligent of soldiers I have ever seen. You not only have my thanks, but my respect as well.

John and Olivia,
My two fellow observers of the human condition. When I saw you around each corner, I felt like I had found my tribe. I hope you make it back next year.

Nicole,
You are more fun than any of Santa’s helpers…and you gotta nice butt.

Amy,
Even though you pulled a drive by ninja on me, I still have to respect your powerful ninja skills.

My girls from Setmore Swamp

Ruby,
You spoke a different language, but you were cute when you did.

Drea,
You seek knowledge and experience. That alone has earned my respect. You actively sought out fun and you gave me your trust, a gift I will always treasure

Three Skulls rocks,

Gypsy,
You found me when I got lost…I know I should thank you for that, but I kinda liked being lost…so I’ll thank you for letting me get lost instead

Red (even though…),
You listened, you contributed, you played. Yay.

Nevik,
As usual, you energy, your attitude, and your drums were a driving force in making this Pennsic a positive one. However, your split finger techniques are hell for a beginning drummer like me, but I do love the pain.

Kazuki,
You are the best stalker I ever had. I also wanted to thank you for teaching me that I have to relearn everything that Nevik has taught me about the duembek.

Orluk Oasis,
Lula, Kaheena, my morning ritual of regretting my lack of sleep was pleasantly interrupted by your welcoming eyes, smiling faces and good conversation. There is no better way to start the day. I hope that tradition continues for a long time.

Raven Spittle,
You gave me boots for my messed up feet. You gave me CheesyWurst at the most appropriate time of the morning/night. One of you made out with me in a place of worship. You gave me companionship. You gave me laughter. You welcomed me and gave me love and understanding.

Lost Boys,
I never knew that getting “Tea Bagged” could be so much fun.

McGroyne,
You touched me in places I never knew I could be touched. I even have the sticker to prove it.

Vlad's,
Like Denny's, always open.

Wow…

I just realized how long this list will be if I continue.

Bottom line, Pennsic is full of incredible people and incredible moments.

Thank you all.

* Vlad's Pleasure Pavilion's 20th Year Festivities*

Greetings unto the comrades and kin that comprise our beloved Pennsic family,

This week, as you are fervently packing and planning for your journey to the hallowed grounds of Cooper’s Lake, we would like to offer you some last minute titillation. What will be waiting there for you, upon your arrival, is an entire week of festivities in celebration of Vlad’s Pleasure Pavilion’s 20th Anniversary. Vlad and his minions hope to supply you with wondrous spectacles of debauchery during the first week of Pennsic that you will not soon forget.

Your itinerary for this hedonistic odyssey we are offering is as follows:

----------------

Monday: Opening Ceremonies

To open this Herculean endeavor we will begin with a mass torch relay around the lake with stops (and hopefully potent refreshment) at various camps of note along the way. Following that will be and filled with performances by many premiere dance troops, the best fire dancers, and of course the lighting of the great Vladian flame!

----------------

Tuesday: Tablero Night

Reaching far back into the past of the Pleasure Pavilion, we have resurrected the ancient and …honorable(?) game of Tablero. In our earliest years at Vlad’s many nights the camp was filled with tables of revelers playing this game which was so abrasive to the liver that Kings and generals would have Tablero sets lobbed at their enemy in hope they would die of Cirrhosis before they ever crossed the field of honor. Likewise, many at Vlad’s have met an untimely demise while engaged in this vile diversion.

If you believe you have the knockers to try your hand at the Tablero tables feel free to try and avail your self of the rules in advance (http://www.gamecabinet.com/rules/Tablero2.html , http://www-cs.canisius.edu/~salley/Articles/tablero.html) . This, however, will be of limited value to you. In lieu of you impending inebriation, and the fact that cheating is encouraged, you will find the rules of limited use.

----------------

Wednesday: Night of 1000 Vlads

One enduring mythos surrounding Vlad’s camp is that only a select few really know what Vlad looks like. In truth, many has been the time that Vlad has adorned friend, acquaintance, and stranger alike in his Coronet and garb and sent them into the crowd as a veritable stunt double. More often than not, none who met the charlatan were any the wiser.

This evening we encourage you all to dress in your best Vlad’s garb. Black (preferably leather) pants and doublet, red or white shirt, and any close approximation of a baronial coronet you can fabricate (or acquire) should suffice.

For those lucky enough to get to the Pleasure Pavilion early enough, Vlad masks will be supplied.

As Vlad has been heard to say, “it’s good to be me”. Don’t you think you should find out for yourself.

----------------

Thursday: The Vladian Games

This night is not for the faint of heart!

We hit the ground running with a proverbial Drag Race…no, not muscle cars and high octane…This event will feature men from the various camps at Pennsic adorned in the most precious female garb they, or we, can muster; navigating various relays and completing many hazardous objectives. Why would any do this you ask…successful participants will be offered jobs as water bearers and stage hands for the Ladies Wet Toga Contest described below. (Those interested should contact Zig or Gunther at Vlad’s)

Following the Drag Race will be some good old fashion mud-wrestling matches, the likes of which have all too long been missing from Pennsic. The matches will be held in challenge format. Any two ladies wishing to face each other should contact the lovely Phia to get the dirt on this salacious little affair.

The Vladian Games are capped off with an event of unequaled beauty and splendor. We all know the loveliest ladies in the known world are found at Pennsic. Thursday the loveliest of the lovely will be found at Vlad’s in the jaw dropping, unequaled, unparalleled Wet Toga Contest. The finalists will be gifted with various decadent prizes, with the winner receiving not only various items of delight, but also VIP treatment and seating at Vlad’s 20th Anniversary Slave Auction. Contestants are urged to sign up as early in the first week as possible at the number of entrants may be capped.

------------------

Friday: The “Fire Cleanses All” Closing Ceremonies.

Guaranteed to be the hottest night at Pennsic. The theme of this evening is all things incendiary. There will of course be fire performers of diverse talents. Further, we will be burning various and sundry artifacts as suits our whim.

If there are any personal effects that you need ‘cleansed’ feel free to add them to our own…as long as they are not explosive, petroleum based, or …living.

And in keeping with ‘turn about being fair play’; as we at the Pleasure Pavilion have burned many outside our camp in effigy, as a coup de gras to our frivolities, this year many of your favorite Vladians and camp friends will, in unnervingly real representation, find their way on to our grand pyre.

-----------------

As always, we have been happy to host you for 20 years, and we look forward to doing so for many, many years to come.

Vlad and his Minions.

Pennsic Calendar 07-08 & On the Block @ Vlad’s

I thought I would send out a quick message to the lists letting people know the Pennsic Calendars for 2007-08 will be available again at Pennsic this year; as well as letting everyone know I will be on the auction block again at Vlad’s Slave Auction.

I have incorporated many of the best suggestions into this years’ product. So far, the few people who’ve seen the new calendar like it a LOT better than last years’.

Last year, no one knew where to FIND them at Pennsic. This year, you can find them for sale at Mystic Mail, merchant booth #181 near the food court. The ONLY internet café, I hope it will be easier to find. You may also find them at a few other locations as well. I also made a lot less of them than last year.

These seemed to be bought, not only for personal or office use, but also as gifts for Christmas and friends. In fact, I know of at least a few people who’re going to this event for the first time because of either receiving the calendar, or seeing it on display somewhere. I think that is kind of cool.

Also, I will be on the block again this year, at Vlad’s Slave Auction. This will be the third year, and I hope I get bought to shoot as interesting an event as the last two.

See Pennsic 34: http://www.pbase.com/darter02/p34_012

See Pennsic 35: http://www.pbase.com/darter02/p35_09

The deal is, you buy me to do a shoot. There are some caveats of course. I do have some events pre-booked to shoot during the war, so it cannot be something that would conflict with my schedule. I am flexible though, and will try to mingle with buyers before I am sold, to work out details and see who’s interested. As far as subject matter, I will shoot ANYTHING you want me to.

Until THEN!

I've heard a few complaints about the new location of the Hershey's ice cream vendor stand near the Battlefield, rather than inside the food court area. I don't think that they have say in where they are placed, but I really haven't had a problem with their new location either (then again, I am not a fighter).

Did anyone that went to Pennsic this year meet a girl named Emer. She is about 5'6" ,brown hair, blue eyes and has hairy armpits as any cute little hippy girl should. If it helps, she was one of the dancers going at it out front of Marrakesh at 10:00 for midnight madness night. It was african drumming going on at the time. Anyone met this person?

seeking "Marrakech" vendor last Pennsic..

HI, I'm a newbie to this tribe but I just did a
BD perf with one of my troupe mates and
she had the most kick ass silk choli that she got
from a vendor named Marrakech, either last year
or the year before, they also carried swords and
shell jewelry as she recalled. I could not find their
name anywhere on the website, so....
I know it's a long shot but does anyone know
who this vendor might be or where to find
this info?

Thank you,
Maria

My husband is a chiropractor and we're packing the table! We'll be at Pennsic pretty much from July 31 'til the end. If anyone needs someone to work out those after-battle kinks, feel free to contact Dr. Mark at 412-716-1490. We're by the lake but will come to your camp if neccessary and will work for cash or barter.

We leave for Pennsic in 31 hours (but who's counting?)...can't wait!

Commedia dell' Arte at Pennsic 2007!

*Forwarded from a list I'm on*

Greetings Commedia Fans!

For the third time in my short life I will again be putting together an ad
hoc Commedia dell' Arte troupe at Pennsic this year! We will meet on
Sunday, rehearse Monday - Thursday, and perform Thursday evening for a noble
patron and his very large household! Any interested adult is welcome, I'll
teach the basics, and we *will* use masks!

If you're interested in playing with me and my wacky buddies, come meet me
at the Amphitheater at 3:00pm Sunday August 5th. I'll be at the
Amphitheater from 12-3:00pm that day. Or email me in the next 48 hours at
"orange at indy dot net."

We're doing it real, muchly in the style of i Sebastiani who taught me
nearly everything I know, and we will be absolutely poking fun at SCA
politics and current events (especially Midrealm's).

The only requirement I have (besides the basic common courtesy of playing
nice with your new friends) is that to come play with us, you must be
*fearless*! I don't have time to teach attitude in three days, so come
prepared to jump off cliffs and enjoy the thrill of improv!

*SPREAD THE WORD!*

Viva la Commedia!
--Sophia the Orange
